The Gap Image

I would be lying if I said that the whole image of Gap isn’t one of the characteristics that appealed me to Gap, and still attracts me to my job.  Everything that a Gap store is in America, is the same in Great Britain, and in all the other countries that you can find Gap in the world, for example Canada, Australia, and in many countries in Europe.  When you walk into a Gap, babyGap, or Gapkids store, we aim provide for you, a relaxed friendly atmosphere, and whether you like this approach or not, you will almost certainly be welcomed and offered assistance.  Gap have been very successful in maintaining the same image and standards of quality and customer service all over the world, and so I do feel proud to be a part of the company and part of the Gap image.

I have a 50% discount off all clothes for myself, and 30% off items bought as gifts, which is one of the bonuses as an employee that I have particularly enjoyed in the past year.  This has allowed me to wear the Gap look without it being all being too expensive.

Working as part of a Gap team.

When I started working at the small babyGap store at CribbsCauseway, Bristol, I noticed straight away that the managers treat you as a friend and a team member.  I was not used to this, as at Marks and Spencer I was rarely spoken to by a manager let alone recognised.  There are about 25 people that work at the particular store that I’m referring to, of ages from 17 to middle age, so you do get the chance to get to know your colleagues well and work well as a team.  There are 3 managers at babyGap, so you get to build a good relationship with them, and at the start of every shift you are given store targets and your own performance feedback through what’s called a “One Minute Meeting”.   This does motivate the team because the communication that you are provided with, allows you to really know how the store is doing, and lets you realise just how much your own performance makes a difference!

Here www.gapinc.com describes how an employee is empowered at  to be innovative and make a difference:

Wherever you might work at Gap Inc.—Gap, Banana Republic or Old Navy, corporate headquarters, or a distribution center—there are some things you can count on finding. Creative energy. A fast-paced environment. The challenge to always have a point of view. The opportunity to speak up and make a difference.

But no matter how fast we're moving or how challenging the demands of business, we treat each other with respect. It's not only part of our corporate culture, it's also built into the policies under which we operate.

Every now and then, games are organised to make a day’s work more entertaining and encourage increased productivity.

An example of such a game could be where the employees working on a particular day (often it’s Saturday as it is the busiest day of the week) are split up into two groups.   There might be a competition between the groups to make the most £50+ sales.  This encourages all members of the group to sell more so that their team can win the prize, and consequently the store’s sales for that day may increase.

Not only do the employees enjoy the teamwork and friendly competitiveness of the day’s shift, but productivity improves.

Gap Inc. At Gap Inc., every difference makes a difference.

If you work at Gap, you “live” these words.  When you have made a difference to the company, i.e. you have made a specific effort, or done a particular task well (e.g. constructed a wall display efficiently, provided customer service which has been frequently commented on) and a colleague recognises this, then you receive a “words to live by” certificate, which at the end of the month, may be selected for a prize.  This is just another way in which you are motivated and recognised for effort at Gap.

Adverts.

Gap always have fun and memorable adverts on the television, they are one of the things that I like about Gap.  They are very effective as people come into the stores asking for items that have appeared on them, which shows that people not only enjoy the adverts, but the adverts are worthwhile.
